His mother’s voice was icy. “Do not even think of trying to play dumb with me, Jonah. It is a recording of you and, and some girl. It is explicit, Jonah. Explicit! What were you thinking?”
Jonah froze, his mind spinning. The blackmailer had sent the recording, but his parents thought it was a girl. Relief washed over him, but it was quickly replaced by guilt. He hated lying to his parents, but he had no choice. If they found out the truth, it would destroy them.
“Mom, I… I can explain,” he stammered, his voice shaky. “It is not what you think.”
“Not what I think?” his mother snapped. “Jonah, this is unacceptable. You are supposed to be setting an example, not, not carrying on like some reckless teenager. Who is this girl? And why would someone send us something like this?”
Jonah took a deep breath, his mind racing. “It is, it is complicated, Mom. It was a mistake. I did not mean for anyone to find out.”
His mother sighed, her voice softening slightly. “Jonah, I don’t want to lecture you, but this is serious. You need to take responsibility for your actions. If this gets out, it could ruin your reputation and ours at church and in the whole neighborhood.”
Jonah’s stomach churned, but he forced himself to keep lying. “I know, Mom. I’m sorry. It certainly will not happen again.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, and when his mother spoke again, her voice was heavy with disappointment.
“We will talk more about this when you come home. But for now, you need to clean up this mess. Whoever sent this recording clearly has it out for you. You need to find out who it is and put a stop to it.”
Jonah nodded, even though she could not see him. “I will, Mom. I promise.”
When the call ended, Jonah slumped back against the bed, his mind racing. The blackmailer had upped the game, and Jonah was running out of options. He could not keep lying to his parents, but he also could not risk them finding out the truth. He had to find a way to stop the blackmailer before it was too late.

Later that day, Jonah arrived at his parents’ house, his stomach in knots. He had been dreading this conversation, but he knew he could not avoid it any longer. As he walked up the driveway, he could see his mother standing in the doorway, her arms crossed and her expression stern.
“Jonah,” she said as he approached, her voice cold. “We need to talk.”
Jonah nodded, his heart pounding as he followed her inside. His father was sitting in the living room, his face unreadable as he stared at the coffee table. On the table was a small USB drive, the source of all his problems.
“Sit down,” his mother said, gesturing to the couch. Jonah obeyed, his hands trembling as he sat across from his parents.
His mother picked up the USB drive and held it up, her eyes narrowing. “Do you know what this is?”
Jonah swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Mom, I can explain.”
“Explain?” his father interjected, his voice sharp. “Jonah, this is a recording of you and some girl. Do you have any idea how this looks? How it makes us look?”
Jonah’s stomach turned, but he forced himself to stay calm. “Dad, it is not what you think. It was a mistake. I did not mean for anyone to find out.”
“A mistake?” his mother repeated, her voice rising. “Jonah, this is not just a mistake. This is a scandal. Do you know how many people could have heard this? How many people could be talking about us right now?”
Jonah’s heart raced, but he forced himself to keep lying.
“Mom, I am very sorry. I did not think anyone would find out. It was a private moment, and someone must have recorded it without my knowledge.”
His father leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “Who is this girl, Jonah? And why would anyone send us a recording of you and a girl?”
Jonah hesitated, his mind racing. “ I do not know, Dad. It could be someone trying to ruin my reputation. I have been getting strange messages lately, but I did not think it was serious.”
His mother’s eyes widened in alarm. “Stalking! Jonah, why didn’t you tell us about this?”
Jonah shook his head, his guilt growing. “I did not want to worry you. I thought I could handle it on my own.”
His father sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Jonah, this is serious. If someone is actively stalking you, we need to go to the police. This could escalate.”
Jonah’s heart skipped a beat. “No, Dad. Please. I can handle this. I just need some time.”
His mother’s expression softened slightly, but her voice was still firm. “Jonah, we are your parents. We are here to help you. But you need to be honest with us. Who is this girl? And why would an anonymous person target you like this?”
Jonah’s mind raced, but he could not think of a believable lie. “Her name is… Sarah,” he said finally, the name coming out of nowhere. “We have been seeing each other for a while, but it is not serious. I did not think anyone knew about it.”
His father’s eyes narrowed. “Sarah? Who is she? Where does she work? What does she do?”
Jonah hesitated, his mind scrambling. “She is…she is a nurse. We met at a charity event a few months ago. It was just a fling, Dad. Nothing serious.”
His mother sighed, her shoulders slumping. “Jonah, this is so unlike you. You have always been so responsible, so careful. What happened?”
Jonah’s heart ached at the disappointment in her voice. “I don’t know, Mom. I messed up. I am sorry.”
His father leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. “Jonah, this is not just about you. This affects all of us. If this gets out, it could ruin our reputation. Do you understand that?”
Jonah nodded, his guilt overwhelming. “I know, Dad. I will do my best to fix this. I promise.”
His mother reached out and took his hand, her voice calm. “Jonah, we love you. We just want what’s best for you. But you need to be careful. Whoever sent this recording clearly is trying to push an agenda. You need to find out who it is and put a stop to it.”
Jonah nodded, his heart heavy. “I will, Mom. I promise.”
As he left his parents’ house, Jonah’s mind was racing. He had bought himself some time, but he knew it would not last. The blackmailer was not going to stop, and Jonah could not keep lying to his parents. He had to find a way to end this before it was too late.
