The door creaked open, revealing the dark expanse of the front yard. The street light revealed long shadows of poles and fences across the carefully lawned grass, and the bushes near the window swayed slightly in the breeze. But there was no sign of anyone or anything out there.
Jonah let out a shaky breath, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "Maybe it was just the wind. Nothing too serious, yea?”
Elliot nodded affirming Jonah's thoughts, though his eyes continued to carefully scan the yard. "Yeah, maybe it was just in our imaginations."
Suddenly from the corner of his eye Elliot saw a black sedan pulling out from the dark end of the street and zooming off. Elliot instinctively ran towards the car trying to reach who they felt had been stalking them.
"You can't catch a car by running, you are not a superhero or something. Forget about it Elliot, just come back!" Jonah called out to him.
He stood biting his nails nervously. Elliot reached the end of the street before giving up on the pursuit. He dropped his shoulders and walked back to the door where Jonah was standing, waiting for him.
They stepped back inside and closed the door, neither of them could shake the feeling that they were being watched. The warmth the evening had provided initially was gone, replaced by a lingering sense of dread.
Elliot walked to the tap, filling a glass with water to help calm his nerves, his breathing still heavy from the short chase. He stood at the counter staring into the blank space his mind racing. Jonah stood in the living room, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his face pale.
"Did you see anything?" Jonah asked, his voice shaking slightly.
Elliot shook his head, running a hand through his hair. "No, nothing. Just the car speeding off. But it was too dark to see who was inside. And the tints of the window did not help matters either."
Jonah frowned, his eyes darting to the window, with loud exhalation, he asked. "Do you think someone was watching us?"
Elliot hesitated before responding, his jaw tightening. "I do not know, Jonah. But it is very possible. With everything going on it would not surprise me if someone was trying to dig up more dirt on us. So many enemies, it is exhausting."
Jonah's shoulders slumped, his face buried in his hands. "This is too much, Elliot. I can't keep living like this, always looking over my shoulder, always worrying about who might find out about us."
Elliot sat down beside him, placing a comforting hand on Jonah's back. "I know, Jonah. I feel the same way. But we have to stay strong. We are so close to the wedding, and once the merger is done, we can figure out a way to be together without all this secrecy. This is not the first obstacle we have encountered together, at the end, love always wins."
Jonah looked up, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and frustration. "But what if it becomes too late? What if someone out there already knows? What if they are just waiting for the right moment to expose us because they do not have enough concrete proof.”
Elliot's expression softened, and he pulled Jonah into a tight embrace. "This is not the right time to permit fear to control us, Jonah. We have come too far to give up now. We will get through this together, no matter what."
Jonah clung to Elliot, his breathing slowly steadying as he absorbed Elliot's words. "I just…. I do not want to lose you, Elliot. Not after everything we have been through."
"Oh relax, do not think too much about this. You won't lose me," Elliot said firmly, pulling back to look Jonah in the eyes. "I promise you, no matter what happens, I am not going anywhere. We will face whatever comes our way together."
Jonah nodded, a small, grateful smile breaking through his worry. "Okay. Together."
They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. But despite the worries and uncertainty, there was a sense of resolve between them. The knowledge that they had each other, that right there, was enough to keep them going.
Elliot straightened up, offering Jonah his hand. "Come on, let's get some rest. We will figure all this out tomorrow."
Jonah took Elliot's hand, allowing himself to be pulled towards the room. "Yeah, you are right. We will figure it out."
As they made their way to the bedroom, the events of the night lived rent free in their minds. Their backs faced to each other. The thought of doubt hung on their minds. Elliot was under the most pressure, he really could not afford to risk anything right now. Not after all he had been through. He found it difficult to sleep as his mind worked all night. Eventually he was able to sleep in the early hours of the morning.

The next morning, Elliot woke up late, his mind still playing the events of the previous night. He glanced over at Jonah, who was still sound asleep, his face peaceful despite the chaos surrounding them. Elliot quietly slipped out of bed, careful not to wake him, and made his way to the kitchen.
As he brewed a pot of coffee, Elliot's thoughts turned to Clara. Elliot knew they needed to be more careful than ever and the only person who could help him right now was her.
He pulled out his phone and dialed Clara's number, his heart beating as he waited for her to answer.
"Elliot?" Clara's voice came through the line, sounding groggy but alert. "It has been a while, Is everything okay?"
Elliot sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Not really. Something crazy happened last night, and I think we need to talk."
There was a pause on the other end, and Elliot could almost hear Clara's mind racing. "What happened?"
"I and Jonah were hanging out last night, when we heard some movements in the bushes. We had thought it was an animal or just the evening breeze, so we brushed it off the first time. " Elliot began.
"Then we heard the rustles followed by a loud thud. I and Jonah were confused. We went to the window to have a look. Then suddenly we saw a flash." Elliot continued.
"I and Jonah decided to investigate, we went outside but we did not see anything, the yard looked as though no one and nothing had been there. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a black sedan pulling out of the dark part of our street.” Elliot narrated.
"I tried to chase it down but I could not." Elliot finished, sighing. Clara listened attentively to all this jn silence, her occasional hums and sighs we're the only indication that she was still on the line.
"I think you are being watched Elliot." Clara said
"I think so too Clara and I can't deal with this right now." Elliot said as he let out a long breath
“This is bad, Elliot. If someone is following you, it could mean they are getting closer to exposing everything. We need to be more careful in the future."
"I know," Elliot said, his voice tight with frustration. "But I do not know what to do. Jonah is scared, and I can't blame him. I am scared too."
Clara was quiet for a moment, and Elliot could hear the faint sound of her pacing on the other end of the line. "Look, I will do what I can to find out what is happening and update you on anything I find out."
Elliot nodded, even though Clara could not see him. "Thanks, Clara. I really do not know what we would do without you."
