Chapter 74: Emily
Emily grabbed the pliers from Matthew and got back to the tricky surgery.
Time ticked by, and Emily's forehead was drenched in sweat. Matthew noticed her intense focus and instinctively grabbed a sterilized handkerchief to wipe her sweat.
"Thanks," Emily muttered.
Five hours later, the surgery was almost done, with just the suturing left.
As Emily was about to start stitching, Matthew took the tool from her. His hand brushed against hers, and the cool touch made him pause. How could someone be so cold?
"I got this. You should take a break," Matthew suggested.
Emily didn't argue. The hard part was over. If Matthew couldn't handle the suturing, he wouldn't be much of a doctor.
She sat nearby, watching closely until the last stitch was in place. Emily silently praised him.
Even for her, getting sutures that perfect would take some effort.
Suturing wasn't her strong suit—not that she couldn't do it, but her stitches weren't exactly pretty.
So, while Med Mastermind was famous, her suturing skills had always been a bit of a joke. But with her reputation, no one dared to say it out loud.
"Thanks a lot today, Med Mastermind," Matthew said sincerely, smiling. "When he wakes up, you'll be seen as a hero."
Emily pursed her lips. "You can take the credit. I don't need it."
If she wanted it, she would've taken it long ago.
Matthew looked at Emily, knowing she meant it.
"Mr. Johnson," Emily suddenly called out.
Matthew was confused and walked over. "What's up?"
Emily scattered a bunch of anesthetic powder into the air. Matthew, caught off guard, passed out. Emily quickly caught him before he hit the ground.
Looking at Matthew's face, which had a hint of resemblance to hers, she smiled lightly. "Matthew, what you just said really hurt me."
But no rush, she believed he'd eventually acknowledge she was his sister.
Just meeting Isabella once, she understood why the family adored her so much.
Isabella's concern for Matthew was genuine.
"Matthew, I'm leaving now. We'll meet again soon," Emily said softly. Then she stood up, opened the door, and Steven walked in.
He asked, "Med Mastermind, how did the surgery go?"
"The surgery was a success," Emily said with a light smile.
Steven asked, "Why are you alone? Where's Mr. Johnson?"
"Sorry," Emily said, and with a wave of her hand, Steven collapsed to the ground.
Emily pulled a signal jammer out of her pocket and cranked it up, causing chaos.
Seeing the mess she made, Emily smiled apologetically. Relying on her sharp memory, she made her way to the helicopter pad and lifted off.
Meanwhile, she didn't forget to turn on the jammer to cover her tracks.
Emily didn't go back to the secret base; it wasn't a secret anymore.
When she had left the secret base, Emily had already sent a message to have everything moved out.
By the time the military came looking, there wouldn't even be a chair left, let alone any fingerprints.
Emily landed the helicopter in an open field and hopped into Eric's car.
"Emily, where have you been? This helicopter looks military!" Eric asked, curious. But when he saw Emily's white coat stained with fresh blood, he was stunned.
"Emily, you can't be Med Mastermind, can you?" he exclaimed in disbelief.
"Yep," Emily didn't hide it. She quickly took off her coat and removed her contact lenses. "Keep this a secret."
"Got it. I know it's important. I'll keep it under wraps," Eric said, patting his chest.
As Eric drove Emily down Mystic Summit, the military had the area surrounded.
"Emily, you're incredible. I'll treat you to a late-night snack tonight," Eric said enthusiastically.
Emily shook her head. "No need, maybe next time. I'm pretty wiped out today."
Eric glanced at Emily and saw she looked exhausted. He didn't push it. "Alright, call me when you're free next time."
"Okay," Emily nodded.
She gave Eric the address of the Johnson Manor and asked him to take her back. She then took a nap.
Unexpectedly, halfway there, Eric noticed a car tailing them.
Eric sped up, but the car behind kept pace.
Seeing through the rearview mirror that it was James, Eric sighed in relief. He had thought it was the military. He glanced at the sleeping Emily and pulled over.
James also stopped when he saw the car pull over.
He had just gotten off work and was driving home when he saw Emily dozing in the passenger seat of this car. Worried, he followed them.
Unexpectedly, the car suddenly sped up, so he did too.
He walked up and saw that the driver, though hard to see clearly, was the same guy Emily had brought to save Harper last time.
"Do you know that chasing a car like this can easily cause an accident?" Eric got out, adjusted his hoodie, and looked at James with displeasure.
"I thought you were a bad guy," James said bluntly, "What's wrong with her?"
"She's tired, resting," Eric said unhappily.
James didn't like Eric, so his attitude wasn't friendly.
Besides, if he remembered correctly, Emily and Eric had a weird relationship.
James glanced at Eric. He wouldn't get mad at an immature person, so he walked to the passenger side to open the door.
The next second, Eric stopped him. "What are you doing? I won't let you touch Emily."
"Are you sure?" James's aura instantly turned cold, and his face darkened.
Eric smugly raised his chin. "Yes, so please leave."
James sneered, stretched his wrist, and yanked Eric out, causing him to fall to the ground. Eric's face twisted in pain, and he rolled several times to alleviate some of the pain, but he still looked at James defiantly.
