Chapter 6 Keira Committed Suicide
Sloane's POV
"How long will it be delayed?" I couldn't help but press him, my voice hoarse.
Jared's expression instantly turned cold, the warmth in his eyes fading. "What, are you that eager to leave me?"
Hearing the accusation in his words, I almost wanted to laugh.
I really wanted to tell him that the one in a hurry wasn't me—it was him.
But seeing how tense he looked right now, I knew any explanation would be pointless.
When there's no common ground, even half a sentence is too much. I simply closed my mouth, too lazy to argue with him anymore.
Our silence made the atmosphere in the hallway even more stifling.
Dinner was served in the manor's classic dining room, with the long table covered in exquisite dishes. Mrs. Montclair was in much better spirits and insisted on dining with us.
Throughout the meal, she kept serving me food and asking after my well-being.
"Sloane, you're too thin. You need to eat more."
Jared also acted unusually, taking the initiative to serve me a piece of fish, carefully removing the bones. I looked at him in confusion, only to see him put on gloves and peel several translucent white shrimp, placing them on the fine china plate in front of me.
"Seeing you two like this puts my mind at ease." Mrs. Montclair smiled with relief, then put on a stern face, pretending to be serious as she said to me, "Sloane, Grandma's got your back. If Jared ever dares to bully you or treat you badly, come tell me anytime, and I'll deal with him for you!"
I forced out a smile and nodded, but my heart was filled with bitterness.
If she knew we were about to divorce, what would that scene look like?
That evening, the maid led us to the master bedroom on the second floor.
After the maid finished arranging everything, she left.
Only Jared and I remained in the room, and awkward silence spread once again.
"I'm going to shower." Jared was the first to break the quiet, grabbing his pajamas and heading into the bathroom.
I breathed a sigh of relief and sat down on the sofa.
Before long, his phone on the nightstand vibrated, the screen lighting up with a new message.
I didn't pay attention, but the phone seemed possessed, vibrating every few dozen seconds, the screen lighting up and dimming, dimming and lighting up, relentlessly.
The sound of water rushed in the bathroom—he clearly couldn't hear it.
I felt a bit irritated, wondering which clueless subordinate was still sending work messages this late.
After hesitating for a moment, I walked over and picked up the phone.
The screen didn't show the content, just a string of message notifications.
I swiped the screen open, but didn't look at the specific content. Just out of courtesy, I typed a few words in the chat box: [He's in the shower.]
After sending it, I placed the phone face down where it was. The world was finally quiet.
More than ten minutes later, Jared came out of the bathroom, toweling his hair.
He was wrapped in a bathrobe, his solid chest half-exposed, water droplets falling from his hair and sliding down his Adam's apple.
He walked straight toward me and sat down beside me, his burning presence washing over me.
"What are you thinking about?" He reached out and pulled me into his arms.
My body stiffened, instinctively resistant. His embrace was hot, yet it made me feel a chill.
Even though I was about to divorce him, I had to admit his physique was impeccable.
"Someone messaged you on your phone." I pushed against his body, instinctively rejecting his intimacy. Just thinking about him treating Keira this way made me feel sick all over.
"Mm." He responded absentmindedly, lowering his head as his kiss landed on the side of my neck.
I turned my head away. "You'd better check—it might be your Keira looking for you."
"No rush." He seemed a bit impatient, tightening his arm around me while his other hand began to wander improperly under my clothes.
Seeing he was serious, my whole body suddenly tensed.
Just then, the phone I'd left face down on the nightstand suddenly rang with a shrill sound.
The piercing ringtone shattered the intimate quiet of the room.
Jared's movements stopped.
He frowned, released me, and got up to grab his phone.
Seeing the caller ID, his expression changed slightly. He took the phone and walked out to the balcony, closing the glass door.
I could vaguely hear him speaking in a low voice, his tone shifting from soothing at first to gradually shocked and urgent.
A few minutes later, he suddenly pushed open the balcony door and strode back in.
With a "smack," he slammed the phone down hard on the coffee table in front of me, the screen instantly shattering into pieces.
"Sloane, what exactly did you do to Keira!"
His voice was ice-cold, as if frozen through, his dark eyes churning with towering rage, glaring at me as if he wanted to devour me alive.
I was stunned by his sudden angry interrogation, completely unable to react.
"You're truly vicious to the extreme!" He leaned down, hands braced on the sofa armrests, trapping me in a tiny space, saying through gritted teeth, "Did you think sending that kind of message was fun? Did you think that would provoke her?"
My mind went blank as I looked at him in confusion. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't even look at who sent the messages."
"You don't know?" Jared laughed bitterly in his rage, his eyes full of disappointment and contempt. "Keira just tried to kill herself! She's being treated at the hospital right now!"
My heartbeat suddenly stopped, my blood seeming to freeze in an instant.
"No... it wasn't me..." I shook my head frantically, trying to explain. "I didn't know it was her. I thought it was your colleague..."
"Enough!" Jared roughly cut me off, grabbing my wrist and yanking me up from the sofa. "You're coming with me to the hospital right now to explain this to Keira in person!"
His strength was alarming—my wrist hurt from his grip.
"Jared, you're hurting me!" I struggled. "Listen to my explanation first!"
He turned a deaf ear, dragging me stumbling toward the door, the fury in his eyes making my heart race with fear.
In his eyes, I seemed to have become a ruthless, malicious shrew.
A huge wave of grievance and anger surged up, washing away my last shred of rationality.
The car raced through the night, scenery flying backward outside the window.
I looked at his tense profile and said coldly, "Stop the car."
Jared acted as if he hadn't heard, the car only going faster.
"I said stop the car!" I raised my voice, my chest heaving violently. "I won't apologize. I didn't do anything wrong!"
"Shut up!" He finally couldn't take it anymore and roared.
"Why should I? Just because she's Keira, because she's fragile, because she has mental health issues, so everything she does is right, and I deserve to be wrongly accused, deserve to kneel and apologize to her?" The grievances bottled up in my heart completely exploded in this moment. I was practically screaming.
Whether from being too emotional or because the baby in my belly sensed something, my stomach suddenly cramped. I instinctively clutched my belly, and immediately after, nausea surged up from my stomach.
"Ugh—"
I dry-heaved, my face deathly pale.
Jared suddenly slowed the car. He grabbed my wrist, forcing me to look at him. "You're pregnant?"
