Chapter 27: Has He Fallen for Beatrice?

Beatrice didn't want to get involved in matters between Arthur and Jennifer. Even without Jennifer, there would be other women around Arthur in the future.

How the women around him treated Sloane would largely depend on his attitude.

Jennifer dared to act so recklessly precisely because Arthur was too indulgent with her.

She made this call hoping Marshall could talk some sense into Arthur.

Marshall understood her intention. From Beatrice's words, he could tell she had decided to completely distance herself from Arthur and Sloane. He wanted to persuade her, but in the end, he just let out a heavy sigh.

He had seen with his own eyes how Arthur and Sloane had treated Beatrice over the years. He really couldn't bring himself to persuade her.

After hanging up with Beatrice, he called Arthur and told him to bring Sloane back to the estate.

After receiving Marshall's call, Arthur quickly brought Sloane back to the estate.

"Grandpa, why did you suddenly ask me to bring Sloane over?"

Marshall rarely interfered with family matters these years, so Arthur vaguely guessed it might be related to what happened last night.

As he expected, Marshall snorted coldly: "If you don't know how to take care of Sloane as a father, you might as well let me do it!"

"Grandpa, did someone say something to you?"

Arthur felt comfortable leaving Sloane in Marshall's care. What worried him was that Marshall might have heard some gossip and misunderstood Jennifer.

The only people involved in last night's incident were Jennifer and Zanna. Zanna wouldn't have the guts to complain directly to Marshall, so she probably told Beatrice.

Thinking of this, Arthur rubbed his temples irritably: "Did Beatrice say something to you again? She's not part of the Capulet Family anymore, so her words can't be trusted."

"Beatrice's words can't be trusted, but Jennifer is worthy of your trust?"

Marshall sighed. He really couldn't understand why Arthur, who was good at everything else, lost his head when it came to Jennifer.

"I won't interfere too much in you young people's relationship problems. I'll just say this—giving up Beatrice for Jennifer, you'll regret it sooner or later!"

"I didn't want to divorce Beatrice. It was Beatrice who wanted to divorce me for her career."

"Think carefully about why Beatrice did this. If you don't want a divorce, stay away from Jennifer."

Arthur fell silent. Marshall looked at him with a hopeless expression and sighed: "Anyway, remember this—Beatrice is Sloane's biological mother. When it comes to Sloane, don't trust any other woman except her."

"I understand."

After leaving the estate, Arthur felt restless and directly called Beatrice.

Because the injury on her hand hadn't healed yet, Beatrice didn't go to the research institute today. She stayed at the estate carefully studying the new project files Sean had sent her.

When she received Arthur's call, she was impatient: "What is it?"

"Beatrice, if you have something to say, come directly to me. Grandpa is so old—what's the point of tattling behind my back?"

Seeing that he called to confront her, Beatrice laughed in anger: "If coming to you was useful, I wouldn't have gone to Grandpa."

"What do you mean?"

"You're blinded by lust. Since Sloane was put in your care, how many incidents have happened? You don't know how to take care of your daughter and can't fulfill your responsibilities as a father. I had no choice but to trouble Grandpa. I can't just watch Sloane be harmed by you and Jennifer."

"Beatrice!"

Her words weren't exactly polite. Arthur, already full of anger, spoke even more coldly: "I admit I was negligent, but you abandoned your family—what right do you have to criticize me?"

In Arthur's view, a lot of messy things had indeed happened recently. Although these matters weren't particularly difficult for him, someone whose world used to revolve only around work, they were certainly annoying.

The solution was simple—as long as Beatrice came back and things were like before.

With this thought, Arthur said: "You keep saying you want to cut ties with me, but you can't completely let go. You still interfere with family matters behind the scenes. If that's the case, why not come back? Whatever you can earn at Orion Global Research Institute, I'll pay you double."

Before Arthur finished speaking, Beatrice hung up directly.

She hadn't expected this was what Arthur was thinking. Just because she broke things off with him didn't mean she could completely ignore it when something happened to Sloane.

Besides, she had already sent the divorce agreement to Arthur. He was the one who, for some unknown reason, was dragging his feet and refusing to sign. He probably forgot about it.

With this thought, Beatrice directly downloaded an electronic version of the divorce agreement and sent it to Arthur's email: [Arthur, you're right. It's time we completely cut ties. Hurry up and sign the agreement.]

Arthur, who had just been hung up on by Beatrice, was about to refocus his thoughts on work.

He was a workaholic—only work could calm him down.

But the moment he received Beatrice's file, he nearly crushed his mouse.

[Are you in such a hurry to divorce me because you have a new lover?]

After receiving Arthur's reply, Beatrice immediately understood.

She finally understood why Arthur, who clearly didn't like her, still refused to divorce—it was probably his inexplicable possessiveness at work.

She used to like Arthur so much, making him the center of everything. Arthur had probably gotten used to her revolving around him. Now that she suddenly pulled away, it was normal for him to struggle with this psychological gap.

After figuring this out, Beatrice suddenly felt that Arthur was actually quite pathetic.

She didn't want to continue throwing herself at him to prove his charm.

After waiting a long time without receiving Beatrice's reply, Arthur grew increasingly restless.

Along with the restlessness came unease.

After barely finishing his work and returning home, Arthur suffered from insomnia again that night.

As he tossed and turned in bed unable to sleep, he thought seriously about his relationship with Beatrice for the first time.

Strangely enough, he clearly liked Jennifer. He used to get annoyed just seeing Beatrice and couldn't wait to get rid of her. But when Beatrice actually proposed divorce, he didn't want it.

Could he have fallen for Beatrice?

As soon as this thought emerged, even Arthur found it absurd.

How could he possibly have fallen for Beatrice? Earlier at the estate, when Marshall suggested he stay away from Jennifer for Beatrice's sake, he had rejected the idea in his mind before even answering.

After thinking carefully for a moment, Arthur decided it was probably because Beatrice had indeed managed various household matters well over the years, leaving him without any worries. He had simply gotten used to having Beatrice at home, so he didn't want her to leave. That was all.

But could he really stay with Beatrice without loving her at all, making Jennifer remain by his side without status for the rest of her life?

Arthur, who was always decisive and efficient in his actions, encountered a difficult problem for the first time. He never thought that one day he would be affected by Beatrice's actions, gradually becoming unlike himself.
