Chapter 161 Grace Took Sleeping Pills When He Left in the Mid-Night
Henry wrapped up the meeting, and it was already 8 PM.
Instead of heading straight to the bedroom, he wandered over to the floor-to-ceiling window in his study, lighting up a couple of smokes. The room filled with a hazy blue fog as he puffed away.
The window glass was all fogged up. When he wiped it clean, he saw about 4 inches of snow piled up outside.
It seemed like it was snowing non-stop this winter.
Henry's long fingers held the cigarette as he slowly blew out smoke, his deep blue eyes staring into the snowy night. After finishing his smoke, he stubbed it out and left the study.
Walking into the living room, he immediately spotted the annual report, sitting there like it was waiting for him.
Flipping through it casually, he saw a picture of him standing next to Sierra, the vibe between them definitely a bit too cozy.
Henry figured Grace had seen it, but she didn't say anything.
He closed the report and headed into the bedroom.
On such a stormy night, Grace was by the window, holding Taylor and gently trying to get her to drink some milk. Henry watched for a bit, then unbuttoned a couple of buttons on his shirt and asked softly, "Why not breastfeed?"
Grace had actually stopped breastfeeding half a month ago, but Henry had no clue.
She replied softly, "I've been taking sleeping pills lately, so I can't breastfeed anymore."
Sometimes, depressed people sent out signals. Right then, Grace was sending one.
But Henry, being his usual detached self, didn't catch on. He walked over, patted Taylor, and said, "Milk's fine too."
Grace blinked absentmindedly, staying silent.
Feeling bored, Henry headed to the bathroom for a shower. While washing up, he couldn't help but think about her indifference and felt that this marriage was falling apart. Maybe Grace was right; maybe they both needed to be free.
He needed to mull it over. That night, he made a rare exception and slept in the master bedroom.
In his prime, Henry was admired by Sierra, feeling on top of the world, which made Grace seem even more dull.
Henry and Grace lay on the same bed, seemingly able to hear the snow falling outside. The whole world was quiet.
Grace couldn't sleep. She asked him softly, "Henry, when are we getting a divorce? You got a new woman, don't you?"
In the dark, Henry was silent for a long time before speaking, "Just because of that photo?"
Grace pressed her lips together, not arguing with him, because Henry always had so many excuses, so many reasons. He'd say the marriage was bad, having a woman on the side was nothing. Maybe he'd even say he hadn't touched Sierra.
She didn't want to hear those words anymore.
Her thin face buried in the white pillow, her voice barely a whisper. "I heard you've been targeting Mr. Young lately. I guess you're not really after Mr. Young; you want to make Mrs. Young's life difficult, right?"
Henry stared at the crystal chandelier above.
After a while, he turned his head and asked her, "Did Celeste tell you that?"
Grace didn't answer directly.
Henry continued, "Are you pleading for Mrs. Young?"
Amara had helped Grace before, even in her toughest times. Even though Grace herself was currently in a tough spot, she didn't want Amara to suffer because of Henry's beef with Brent. Amara's life was already tough enough!
Grace looked at Henry and said softly, "You don't need to go after Mrs. Young; she doesn't mean any harm!"
Henry was about to respond when his phone, lying next to the pillow, rang. He glanced at it; it was Sierra calling.
Normally, Henry wouldn't bother picking up this call, but maybe it was the stormy night or the fact that Grace was pleading for Amara that got to him. He said softly, "I'll take this in the study."
Without a second thought, he got out of bed.
He opened the door and left, letting a bit of cold air in. Taylor in the crib whimpered softly. Grace got up, gently patting Taylor, trying to soothe her back to sleep.
After a bit, Henry came back.
He glanced at Grace and then headed into the dressing room to change. His voice came from inside. "I need to go out for a bit. You and the baby go to sleep first."
Grace, holding the baby, walked to the dressing room door.
Henry was taking off his bathrobe and putting on a shirt and casual pants. Even on a stormy night, when meeting Sierra, he was still all about looking sharp.
Seeing Grace out of the corner of his eye, he frowned. "Why aren't you sleeping?"
Grace looked down at Taylor. "Taylor is fussy! Henry, since you care so much about her, why not give her a proper status?"
Grace was done caring. She couldn't fight Henry; she just wanted out.
Under the crystal light, Henry slowly tidied his clothes. Late at night, he was impeccably dressed, making her look even more worn out.
After a long time, he sneered, "Why don't you beg me, ask me not to go out."
Grace wouldn't beg Henry. She didn't say a word, just held Taylor and went back to the bedroom, still gently coaxing. She sang a soft lullaby to Taylor, her expression particularly gentle.
Henry stood there quietly. He thought, 'If Grace showed me just a fraction of the tenderness she showed Taylor, how did we end up like this? We could have been so happy.'
Nevertheless, Henry departed into the dark, snowy night to meet Sierra.Downstairs, the sound of a car engine starting could be heard.
Grace stood quietly by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the black Bentley slowly drive away from the villa. Suddenly, her heart raced. She put Taylor in the crib.
The snow kept falling.
Grace lay on the big bed, vaguely hearing the bodyguards downstairs chatting while having a midnight snack. She could also hear the faint sound of snowflakes hitting the glass.
She couldn't sleep; her heart was racing.
Tonight, she had asked Henry for help, saying she was sick. But Henry turned a blind eye.
Grace had never had such thoughts before, but but in that moment, a torrent of terrifying thoughts raced through her mind like a stampede. She couldn't control herself!
She couldn't control herself. She sat up, twisted open the bottle of sleeping pills in the dark, poured out about 20 pills, and swallowed them dryly one by one.
Grace slowly lay on the big bed. Before losing consciousness, she seemed to return to Tranquil Heights, back to when she was a few years old. Donna held her, watching a small car drive through the black wrought-iron gate. The car stopped, and Nathan got out, lovingly calling her name.
"Grace, come to Daddy,"
"Grace, how is Clara? How is Taylor?"
"Grace, have you visited Oliver?"
Tears welled up in Grace's eyes. She struggled painfully, unwilling to fall into the abyss. Who could save her? No one!
Henry drove away from the villa, and after about half an hour, he suddenly felt uneasy.
He thought for a moment and called the bodyguard, asking if everything was okay at home. The bodyguard glanced upstairs and said, "Mr. Montague, don't worry. Mrs. Montague has turned off the lights and should be asleep!"
Henry hung up the phone, his face expressionless.
The black Range Rover, braving the storm, drove farther and farther away from the villa.
