Chapter33
Garrett’s tone was flat, kind of mocking, kind of self-deprecating, “You’ve been yelling at her for years and she never talks back. Now she throws a few sarcastic lines at you, and you’re freaking out? Can’t even take it like a woman?”
“Fuck!”
Norman almost got so mad he fell over backward, but everyone else laughed at what Garrett said.
Garrett usually talked pretty mean. When he roasted people, he never held back. Everyone was used to the way he talked.
Everyone was laughing, but Bethany’s face fell, because she knew this meant Garrett didn’t want to go after Adrienne.
Adrienne slapped her, Garrett didn’t want to do anything about it.
Bethany’s hand hanging at her side slowly tightened, and she casually asked, “Are there any hard-boiled eggs here?”
She was reminding everyone: There are still slap marks on my face.
Only then did everyone realize.
“Adrienne was way out of line, she started hitting as soon as she came in.”
“Beth, I went to get some eggs, you sit for a bit, that slap mark looked painful to me.”
Norman looked at Garrett again, sounding sarcastic, “You’re not gonna do anything about this either?”
Garrett stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray next to him, a half-smile in his eyes, “I’ll go slap them back right now.”
After he finished speaking, he walked toward the master bedroom.
Nobody knew if he was being serious or just joking, but anyway, Garrett did go into the master bedroom.
Once the master bedroom door was closed, nobody knew what he was doing.
Adrienne was standing at the table by the window. After she turned on the computer, she bent over and looked through the stuff on it.
. She remembered she had put it in this file before, but now the stuff in the file was gone.
She checked the recycle bin again, still didn’t find it.
The two maids who took care of her before were both old, so even if they really gave her stuff to Bethany, there’s no way they could’ve cleaned it out this well.
She heard footsteps behind her, then someone hugged her around the waist.

She knew it was Garrett, didn’t care.
I didn’t expect him to say, “Which songs are you looking for?”
She froze all over and looked back at him.
Garrett looked kind of indifferent, “Bethany said that was something Loretta worked on with her, so I just gave it to her.”
Adrienne just felt like a bolt of lightning struck her head, and she almost lost her balance.
The last bit of color drained from her face, and she raised her hand and slapped him.
Garrett frowned and didn’t dodge.
Adrienne was shaking with anger. That was her work, her song. She had spent two whole years on it, revising it over and over. Every line of the lyrics held memories from all those years they had together. Sometimes, when she wrote something sad, she would even secretly cry under the covers.
“Garrett, that was my stuff. You gave my stuff away. Did you ever think to ask me?”
Garrett frowned, his face cold. “It’s yours? Adrienne, how many lies are you going to tell?”
Adrienne just felt weak and had to lean on the table behind her so she wouldn’t slide down.
Her chest hurt a lot, and when people got too emotional, they really did feel like throwing up.
Maybe it was because she looked too pale, Garrett didn’t say anything else to upset her and went over to help her.
“Alright, I won’t hold it against you for lying, just stop going against Bethany.”
Adrienne’s hand was on the table next to her, and she shoved him hard.
Garrett was pushed back two steps, his face showing traces of danger.
Adrienne grabbed the laptop, held back her tears, and was about to leave, but he pulled her back.
“Where did you go?”
Adrienne didn’t want to say a word to him and stomped hard on his foot.
