Chapter 29 As Practice Material
Evelyn's POV
I took a deep breath, gathering that "tingling" energy in my palm, then wrapped it around the wound, hoping it would heal quickly.
I opened my eyes and vaguely saw silver sparkles disappear in an instant. Looking at the wound again, the deep purple bruise faded and vanished at a visible speed. In less than three seconds, my skin returned to its original smooth state.
"Evelyn, you're really talented. Normally, it's very difficult to heal a wound you can't see. But you did it—you've learned how to heal others and treat simple bruises on yourself."
So even though I still didn't know what kind of shapeshifter I was, I could still prove myself.
If I could heal more people in the future, that might be a pretty good thing.
"I knew I wasn't wrong about you. From now on, be prepared—I'm going to make the classes more intense." Vicky's lips curved into a smile as she looked at me happily.
"I'm ready!" I looked at Vicky and promised seriously.
The huge surprise made me so excited I almost wanted to jump up. In my excitement, when I stood up, I lost my balance.
"That's great! Kane, look! I..."
I excitedly wanted to show Kane, but my foot slipped and I lost my balance completely, falling backward.
I thought I was done for, closed my eyes, and figured I'd just have a close encounter with the floor.
A dark figure moved at an amazing speed, his long arm reaching out and catching me firmly.
I fell into a burning hot and solid embrace.
My nose was instantly filled with his clean scent, like the smell of sheets dried in the sun.
I instinctively grabbed onto his shirt. Kane didn't let go of me right away.
Instead, I felt his body tense up instantly, his arms tightening, almost locking me in his embrace.
I looked up and met his deep golden eyes.
At that moment, his intensely aggressive gaze was fixed on me, his pupils slightly contracted, like a wild beast guarding its food, alert to any potential threat around us.
That look was too intense and too overwhelming. My heart was beating so fast that everyone must have been able to hear it.
"Kane... I'm fine, just slipped." I said softly, trying to ease this awkward yet tense atmosphere.
Kane didn't say anything. After confirming I really wasn't hurt, I thought he would let me go, but he still held me tightly.
"Kane... the professor is still watching..." I pointed toward Vicky's direction, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Only then did Kane, at an extremely slow and extremely reluctant speed, slowly help me stand upright.
I felt like at that moment he was like a child whose favorite toy had been taken away—his mood was clearly not good.
Kane let go, but still stood half a step behind me.
"Ahem."
Vicky was holding a stack of books, a meaningful smile on her lips. Her eyes swept over both of us, clearly noticing Kane's defensive state just now, but she didn't point it out. She just smiled and looked at us both again.
"That's it for today's class. Ms. Gray, you did very well."
She gathered her things and walked to the door, then suddenly stopped and turned back. "You can practice that healing spell on your own. But remember to be careful—don't cast spells on yourself when you're not confident, especially on wounds you can't see. This is very important. If I find out you're doing this, future classes will be stopped."
"But Professor, if I don't have any bruises, I can't practice. I can't deliberately bang into tables every time, right?" I walked to the door, feeling a bit troubled, and seriously.
At that moment, Kane followed over and suddenly spoke up, "I can."
Vicky and I both turned to look at him, but Kane’s expression remained perfectly calm.
Vicky raised an eyebrow, clearly a bit surprised by this answer.
"Kane, while I appreciate your spirit of dedication, healing spells aren't child's play. If done incorrectly, they could cause magic buildup or skin burns."
"I trust her." Kane insisted, his gaze falling on me.
He said it lightly, but it hit my heart like a hammer. I never thought his trust in me could reach this level.
Vicky looked at Kane's determined attitude and sighed helplessly.
"Alright, since you insist, you'll take the risk yourselves. I don't recommend this approach, but I can't stop you either." She shrugged, showing a helpless expression.
"I'll be careful! Before I'm completely skilled, I absolutely won't practice randomly on other people!" I quickly promised.
"I wish you both... happy practicing." Vicky gave us one last look.
With the sound of the door closing, only Kane and I were left in the classroom.
The air suddenly became quiet with a subtle hint of something more.
"Um... Kane, are you really willing to let me practice on you? There might really be danger..." I looked at him somewhat anxiously, feeling a bit unconfident.
Kane walked up to me, looked down at me, "I trust you."
He extended his hand, and I saw the bruise on his wrist. "This spot."
Looking at him so willing to let me "work on him," the nervousness in my heart faded quite a bit, replaced by a strange sense of responsibility.
"Okay, I'll try my best not to hurt you, and I'll be very serious about healing your wound."
I took a deep breath, recalling that "tingling" sensation.
Silver starlight gathered in my palm again. I carefully placed my hand over his wrist.
Kane's body was very warm. When my magic touched his skin, I felt him tremble slightly.
"Does it hurt?" I asked nervously.
"No, it feels good." The corner of Kane's mouth curved into an extremely faint smile.
"Kane, thank you." I said softly.
"We're friends, aren't we?" He looked back at me, his eyes becoming deep.
"Yes, we're friends. From now on, I'll be your backup, no matter what kind of shapeshifter I am." I looked at him firmly.
"Let's go. After practicing all morning, you must be hungry. Let's go to the cafeteria." I smiled at him and turned to walk out first.
"Okay!" Kane responded, following me out of the classroom.
"By the way, Kane, what do you want to eat? I want a small cake to celebrate learning my first healing spell!"
"Okay, I'll have a burger combo."
"Then lunch is on me today. Eat more—after all, you're going to be my 'exclusive practice subject' from now on. You need to keep your strength up!"
Kane stood beside me, and I saw a smile on his face in the sunlight. Kane seemed to smile a lot more lately, though it seemed to be only when it was just the two of us.
On the way to the cafeteria, Kane was still his usual quiet self, but whenever I got close to him, that tense defensive posture immediately relaxed quite a bit.
I saw him take out that little notebook and pen from his pocket again.
"What are you writing?" I asked curiously, leaning over to look.
