Chapter 29: Full Moon And A Bribe
There is a big possibility that his aunt and other members of the family already heard that she tried to escape and is unwilling to stay. She is sure they have their spies in this estate, and also with the Baron going to the seaside himself to fetch her after she escaped, there will surely be rumors about it in the market places.
They know she never wanted this marriage, so his aunt already have an idea of what her response will be. She feels like screaming right now on this breakfast table that she never wanted this marriage and was forced into it and if the Baron won’t let her go then they are free to get him a second wife.
That was the words in her heart, mind and soul and even at the tip of her tongue but when she opened her mouth to say it, she said something different.
“As the Baron, he knows what’s best for his people. I’m sure when he decided to pick me as a wife, he had their best interest at heart. He must have also felt that I will be the right person to be the Baroness and that I will have his people’s interest at heart as well”
The moment she made this statement, she was shocked by her own words. She could not tell what got into her like she was under some spell for the time frame she said it.
Damian was also surprised by her statement and that included his aunt and Arthur who stood close by.
Damian didn’t know what got into her but then he smiled and looked at his aunt with a questionable look. His aunt seemed tongue tied, she looked at Althea in confusion. Was this not the same girl who ran away? She asked herself.
“What do you have to say now aunt or didn’t you just hear her?” Damian smirked.
“I heard her but it doesn’t change the fact that she is human, what if you give birth to wolfless children” Maria said in worry.
“You must think she is just a mere human, she is the most powerful human I know. We will not just have kids with wolfs we will also have kids that will possess the kind of ability she has”
“That is forbidden in our family, our blood should not be missed with human blood. This has never happened since the beginning of our clan” Maria said worriedly.
“Then it’s about time there is a change” Damian said and stood up.
Maria stood up too “No Damian, it will weaken us. You have to think about this deeply, if you do not want us losing our power in Westland and if you do not want the position of Baron to be shifted to another clan, then you have to do the right thing which is let her go or marry a second wife to take her position” Maria said before walking out of there.
Damian clenched his fist and gritted his teeth, his eyes were red in anger. He looked down at Althea and she looked away.
Damian sighed and ran a hand on his hair making it messy. He walked out of there and Arthur and some of his guards followed behind.
Althea sighed in relief, she was glad the whole place was now calm and quiet from the tension just now.
She went back to the chamber and stood in front of the mirror.
She bit her bottom lip remembering all that she had mistakenly said, what exactly got into her head?
Her mouth had opened to say something different from what was on her mind. She found it strange that she had said such.
The mistake has been made. It's not like if she had said what she wanted to say, Damian would have let her go. He would have still done things his way, she doubt his family will be able to change his mind.
But if they do, she will be grateful to them, she hopes when that time comes he will give her the option to leave.
She did not see Damian for the rest of the day which she was glad of and it was only during dinner time he had requested to have dinner with her.
She felt uncomfortable as he stared at her throughout.
Damian smiled as he watched her eat, he remembered what she had said to his aunt during breakfast and his heart warmed.
“About what my aunt said, do not think you have a hope of leaving this place. They can’t make me change my mind, have that at the back of your head that you will remain my wife and my only wife” he said to her just in case she was hopeful.
He was right because he just shattered her last hope.
Althea bit her bottom lip to hold herself from showing any emotion, she went on to say “And also about what I said earlier, I did not mean it, it was not me speaking. I was just scared of what you were going to do to me which is why I said it”
Thinking he will get angry he instead held her hand and kissed it then smiled "Of course I know it was not you speaking, rather it is the you in your heart” he pointed at her heart “The you who is familiar with me from ten years ago that said it, your sub consciousness. That is the words the Althea I knew ten years ago would surely say” he kissed her hand again and went on to eat his food while in a good mood.
Althea became confused and lost in thought.
After dinner he had left the chamber to attend to some work while she went to sleep.
Later that night he returned and lay close to her, dragging her close to his chest, then kissed her forehead. He leaned close to her shoulder as usual and sniffed her scent.
Althea could not sleep anymore, apart from the discomfort she felt from Damian being so close to her, the noise coming from outside made her distracted. from her side of the bed she could see outside the window, it was a full moon so it explains while she heard a lot of wolf bark.
Since everyone is in their wolf form, why then has Damian not changed? Althea became tense and scared. What is going to happen if he suddenly changes? Will he bite her in her neck?
She had read a book in the library that one way couples mate is if the man bite the female in her neck. There are history of human and wolf mating that way during the full moon. Is he here to mate her instead of being outside with the others? Althea swallows in fear, she doesn’t want him to do it. It’s not like she will turn to a wolf in that way but she will be bound to him.
