Chapter 6: The First Transformation
The cold, controlled silence was a lie.
They are diverting. Nyx’s voice was the only thing preventing my heart from hammering a hole through my chest. The stream didn't hold them long. They are splitting up. One is heading due west, skirting the rise.
I, the pathetic, terrified spectator named Anya, could only offer a shuddering gasp. "West? That's... that's where the old Silverwood border is."
It is the fastest route to true Shadowlands territory. And you are walking it too slowly. Her patience was razor-thin. If the wolf moving west cuts the perimeter fast enough, he will intersect our trail in under an hour.
My body was a dull, heavy machine responding to her commands, fueled by residual adrenaline. But the sheer exertion of the last few hours had caught up. My muscles were screaming, not from lack of healing, but from fatigue. I slumped against a massive, moss-covered boulder.
"I... I need five minutes. Just five minutes." I hated how weak the plea sounded, even inside my own head.
No. We rest when we are truly safe. You are burning energy inefficiently. Nyx was already mapping out the next phase, the ultimate pragmatist. We will utilize the small ravine ahead. It offers cover and a quick drop to a lower path. But the descent is steep.
I pushed off the rock, trying to ignore the way my legs trembled. "I can do steep. I've climbed the practice cliffs before."
You were an omega then. You are a fugitive now. Your body is denser and faster, but your mind is still weighted down by memory and fear. Look down.
I risked a glance at my feet. The nails, which had been chipped and dirty, were now thicker, stronger, and slightly elongated, more claw than nail. They felt cemented to the earth, giving me an impossible grip.
“The healing… It’s changing more than just cuts, isn’t it?” My voice was barely a breath.
It is reshaping the structure. You were soft. You are becoming resilient. It is the Luna Essence, finally free of the repression. It will harden every inch of you.
“Hardened, like Kaelen?” The name tasted like ash.
No. Hardened like survival. Your wolf is a celestial mechanism, not a pack brute. Now move. Ravine.
The ravine was indeed steep. A sharp, almost vertical drop that a normal human would need ropes for, or a fully shifted wolf could leap. For my half-powered, terrified form, it was a terrifying compromise.
I began the descent sideways, grabbing for roots, slipping on the damp slate. The fear returned, sharp and clear.
"I’m going to fall! We'll make noise! They'll hear us!" My hands scrabbled uselessly at the smooth, wet rock.
Let go, Anya. Nyx ordered, the tone suddenly soft, almost seductive, but laced with iron. Let go of the control you never truly had. You cannot navigate this descent with hesitation.
“But I’ll break my leg! We'll be trapped!” The memory of the pain from the rejection was still too fresh; I couldn’t bear another wound.
The strength is already inside you. Trust the structure. Surrender to the need.
I felt the last root slip from my grasp. I cried out, a small, pathetic sound, as my body tumbled, gaining speed on the slick surface.
I was falling.
In that moment of absolute, unrestrained terror, my will shattered. And Nyx was there to catch the pieces.
The fall should have resulted in a sickening crash. Instead, mid-air, a violent, ripping energy surged from my core, radiating outward. It was instantaneous, painful, and glorious.
My spine elongated, cracking and resetting with thunderous speed. My cheekbones jutted, reforming my face into something narrower and sharper. My teeth grew into needlepoints. Thick, dark fur erupted over my skin, not the sleek coat of a normal wolf, but a dense, almost black shadow that absorbed the scant light.
I didn't land. I was impacted.
The ground beneath me cracked, a spiderweb of shattered shale. But my body didn't absorb the shock; it deflected it. The pain, while immense, was contained, localized only to the physical shift itself. My ribs reset in the instant they bent. My legs, now thickened, wolfish limbs, absorbed the blow with an easy, primal thud.
I was lying in the dirt, halfway down the ravine, panting heavily. The shift was incomplete, a massive, monstrous partial shift. My head was still somewhat human, my hands were wolf paws, and my body was cloaked in the obsidian shadow-fur.
See? The vessel is perfect. Nyx sounded breathless, a flicker of pure exhilaration in her tone. The moment of pressure was the key. The fear unlocks the strength.
But the shift was still terrifying. I scrambled backward on my paws, trying to press myself into the damp earth, my heart pounding a savage rhythm.
“What was that? I’m... I’m monstrous! I look like one of the dark rogues!” The words were thick and muffled, caught in my newly broadened jaw.
You look like power. And your hearing is now enhanced. Listen.
I froze. The chaotic symphony of the forest narrowed instantly. I could hear the snap of a twig far above, near the top of the ravine. The wolf is moving west.
“This is where the scent went cold, but look at this.” The voice was sharp, a Beta by the sound of the authoritative tone.
I heard the sound of a heavy body padding to the edge of the ravine. I was hidden by a shallow overhang, but if he shifted to human, he could see the disturbed earth.
Silence. Hold the form. Let the earth be your disguise. Nyx’s command was absolute.
I couldn't move. I was a massive, half-wolf creature lying in the dirt, paralyzed by fear. My newly shifted legs were rigid with terror.
“The soil is broken here. Something fell. Something heavy.” The Beta sounded intrigued, a hunter smelling a larger prey than he expected.
He moved closer to the edge. I could hear his breath and the subtle clinking of the pack emblem on his collar. He was right above me.
Look up. Show him the eyes.
“No, I can’t! I can’t look at him! He’ll see the color! He’ll know!” I mentally screamed, the shame of my distinct, violet eyes overriding the need for defense.
Do not rely on fear, Anya. Use anger. Let the memory of Kaelen’s cold heart fuel the surge. He is packed. Pack betrayed you. Pack will die.
Nyx didn't wait for my permission. She forced a torrent of blinding, red-hot fury into my consciousness, the perfect, distilled hatred for the pack that had rejected and killed me.
My head snapped up. I focused on the blurred shape of the Beta above. In that instant, the last remaining trace of human brown burned away from my eyes. The Beta, glancing down, stumbled back with a terrified grunt.
What he saw was not a broken omega. He saw two blazing violet orbs staring up at him from the shadows, radiating a cold, alien light that momentarily paralyzed him.
“It’s... it’s not an omega. Get back!” He yelled, fear replacing authority.
He began scrambling backward. My chance. Nyx took full control.
The large, heavy half-wolf form surged. I scrambled up the wall of the ravine with unnatural speed, using the massive paws to grip the shattered rock. I didn't attack. I didn't need to. I reached the top just as the Beta was shifting into his own combat form, his mind reeling from the sight of the celestial violet eyes.
Nyx unleashed a sound, a silent, psychic roar of pure dominance. It wasn't a wolf howl. It was a pressure wave of power that hit the Beta directly in his skull.
He collapsed, his nose starting to bleed, whimpering as his Alpha-level conditioning shattered under the pressure of my strange, divine energy.
He is stunned. Move.
Nyx didn't linger to kill him. We turned and sprinted west, away from the path, the new, half-shifted body moving with a speed and efficiency that was breathtaking. The power felt like a vast, deep current, uncontrolled but utterly dependable.
The wolf form, even partial, gave me incredible sensory feedback. I could smell the Beta's metallic blood on the forest floor, and I felt the small surge of Luna Essence rush to my legs, instantly soothing the strain of the inhuman sprint.
I was no longer Anya. I was a weapon. And she was holding the trigger.
"We hurt him," I whispered internally, shocked. "We used the fear."
We survived. Nyx corrected, her voice already regaining its cold equilibrium. And he saw the eyes. The pack will know something monstrous is hunting on their borders now. They won't send three wolves next time. They will send the Alpha. Now, let us find a deep shadow where you can fully surrender to the strength.
The hunt had just escalated, and I was now the monster they feared.
