Chapter 2 The Space Between Two Sisters
The next morning broke gray and quiet over Willow Creek. A mist had rolled in from the hills, softening the edges of everything—the trees, the rooftops, even the sharp lines of the Rivera mansion. It was the kind of morning that made the world feel paused, as if it were holding its breath.
Inside the Rivera estate, Isabella stood by the kitchen window, stirring her tea even though it had long gone cold. She wore her robe loosely, her hair falling in waves down her back, unstyled for once. The house was silent. Daniel had left early for a business trip, leaving behind the scent of his cologne and the echo of his dismissive words.
Her place.
They had kept her awake all night.
The doorbell broke through her thoughts.
Her first instinct was to ignore it—no one visited this early, and most of her friends knew better than to appear without calling first. But something in the sound—a hesitant, almost apologetic ring—made her pause.
She opened the door and froze.
Mariah stood there, clutching a small paper bag, her dark hair damp from the mist. Her eyes looked tired, her clothes simple—jeans, a sweater, boots scuffed at the toes.
“Morning,” Mariah said quietly.
“Mariah,” Isabella breathed. “What are you—”
“I brought you something,” she interrupted, holding out the bag. “The bakery had your favorite—those lemon tarts you used to love.”
For a moment, Isabella didn’t move. Then she smiled, soft and surprised, and stepped aside. “Come in.”
The sisters hadn’t seen each other in months, not really. Messages, yes. Obligations, sometimes. But not like this—not face to face, without expectation or pretense.
Mariah stepped into the foyer, her boots squeaking faintly against the polished floor. She glanced around, taking in the high ceilings, the chandeliers, the portraits of ancestors she’d never met. It all felt too perfect, too cold.
“You look…” Isabella began, searching for the right word.
“Like I’ve been working double shifts at the diner?” Mariah said with a half-smile. “Because that’s accurate.”
Isabella laughed softly, tension melting from her shoulders. “I was going to say strong.”
“Strong’s a nice way to say exhausted.”
They moved to the kitchen, where Isabella warmed the kettle again and poured fresh tea for them both. The air between them felt tentative, like two people walking across thin ice—careful not to crack what little connection they still had.
“So,” Mariah said finally, wrapping her hands around her cup. “How’s life in the palace?”
Isabella’s lips curved faintly, but her eyes gave her away. “It’s quieter than it looks.”
“Quiet’s not always bad.”
“It is,” Isabella said softly. “When it’s the kind of quiet that feels like you’re disappearing.”
Mariah looked at her then—really looked. The perfect older sister, polished and composed, suddenly seemed fragile. Her eyes glistened, her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her sleeve.
“Daniel still treating you like you’re part of his décor?”
“Mariah.”
“I’m serious.”
Isabella sighed. “It’s… complicated.”
Mariah leaned back in her chair. “That’s what you always say when you’re unhappy but too proud to admit it.”
The silence that followed was heavy but not cruel. It carried years of unspoken things—resentment, love, distance.
“You could always come stay with me,” Mariah said after a moment, trying to sound light. “My couch is lumpy, but it’s better than living with a man who forgets your name.”
Isabella smiled faintly. “I appreciate the offer. But your couch and I wouldn’t get along.”
Mariah laughed, and for a heartbeat, they were just sisters again—two girls who used to share secrets under the covers, whispering about dreams and boys and escape.
Then Isabella’s phone buzzed on the counter. The screen flashed Daniel’s name.
She turned it face-down without answering.
Mariah’s gaze flicked toward it, a small knowing smirk tugging at her lips. “Complicated?”
“Very.”
When the laughter faded, Isabella reached across the table, her tone softening. “You didn’t come all the way here just to bring me pastries, did you?”
Mariah hesitated. “No. I… I needed to see you.”
“Why now?”
“Because,” she said, voice catching, “last night I realized I hate how far we’ve drifted. You’re my sister, Bella. No matter how different our lives got.”
Isabella’s throat tightened. For years she had convinced herself that distance was safety—that being apart kept them both from reopening old wounds. But now, looking at Mariah, she saw the truth.
They had both been lonely in different ways.
“I missed you too,” Isabella whispered.
They sat in silence for a while, sipping tea as rain began to fall again outside. The rhythm of it filled the gaps between words, like nature itself was trying to mend what life had broken.
“Do you remember the old willow tree behind the creek?” Mariah asked suddenly.
“Of course,” Isabella smiled. “We carved our initials into it.”
“You carved yours into it,” Mariah corrected, grinning. “Mine looked like chicken scratches.”
Isabella laughed, a sound that felt real this time. “We should go there again someday.”
“Maybe,” Mariah said. “It’s probably still standing. Like us.”
They both smiled—but there was something bittersweet in it, a shared understanding that time didn’t erase everything.
When Mariah finally stood to leave, the clouds had begun to break apart. Sunlight spilled faintly through the kitchen window, touching her hair like gold.
“Thanks for the tea,” she said.
“Thanks for the tarts.”
Mariah nodded, slinging her jacket over her arm. “I’ll call you soon.”
“Please do.”
As she walked out, Isabella followed her to the door. For a brief moment, they hugged—awkward at first, then tight, as if afraid to let go.
When Mariah stepped out into the sunlight, Isabella lingered in the doorway, watching her sister walk down the long drive. There was a strange ache in her chest—something between hope and fear.
And then she saw it.
A shadow at the far end of the road.
A man, tall and lean, walking with slow, deliberate steps, a backpack slung over one shoulder. His clothes were worn, his hair damp from the rain, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
He didn’t seem to notice the mansion or the woman standing in its doorway—but Isabella noticed him.
Something about the way he moved, unhurried yet purposeful, made her breath catch.
Mariah, too, glanced back once as she reached the end of the drive. Her gaze followed his figure briefly before she turned the corner and disappeared from sight.
Neither sister knew that the same man would soon become the center of everything between them—love, jealousy, redemption, and ruin.
