The night was stiffening hot. As at that time when the fight was going on in the town, Victor was restless and worried. He had heard gunshots in the far distance. The bizarre thing about this gunshots sounds was that it did not sound like a regular sound, it sounded more like the sound canon makes. What the hell was happening? He wondered, it was when he heard werewolves screams that the whole thing hits him. Jack Axgorn had gone ahead with the fight. The Alpha did not listen to his warnings. He swore loudly and crossed the room to his small radio which was on a table. He picked it and snapped on the radio.
The announcer voice was saying:
“The werewolves have invaded the town of Fur Rivers. Right now, there’s a big fight between men and beasts. Folks are strictly advised to keep themselves in the safety of their homes. The Fur Hunters and our good Mr Caesar Davenport will handle the situation. Be advised, don't come out of your homes. Let the Fur Hunters do their work. Stay Safe people.”
Victor uttered another curse as he snapped off the radio. Selena! He hoped she was safe? He needed to check on her. His heart pounding, he dug his hand into his pocket and took out his phone. He dialed her number. It rang for sometime then he heard she came on the line.
“Baby, you called. I know you’ll be worried sick.”
“Of course, I am!! Are you alright? I heard gunshots and those screams. Are you okay, Violet?” Even he could still hear the pandemonium going on at the other end.
“I’m not fine! I can’t stand this noise. This screams….. the screams of those animals…….I can’t stand those screams anymore, baby I can’t.” there was terror in her voice Victor swore under his breath.
“Look Violet, you will be fine, alright. Just stay in your house, okay. Don’t come out. Everything will be over soon, I promise you my darling.”
“No! I can’t stay! I can’t! Those wolves……..those wolves! I was even planning to call you. I wanna come over to your place.”
Her words hit him like a sludge to his chest. He barked into the phone.
“What? Now? Come On don’t be dumb Violet! Don’t you dare do something stupid like that! Stay the fuck where you are!”
“No! I’m coming! I can’t stay here! Those beasts screams are getting on my nerves! I can’t stand it. I’m on my way!”
“Don’t you dare do that! Don’t you dare!” He yelled into the phone. “Do you hear me, Violet?” Then he heard a click at the other end. “Violet! Violet!” He suddenly realized she had ended the call. He remained motionless for a long second, his face congested with raw rage. He knew her. His woman was no bluffer. If she says she was coming to his place, that’s what she would do. His mind began to work. Somehow, he’s got to do something. Coming here with all those rackets going on will be too dangerous. She could fall into the hands of those Fur Hunters, she could be caught in a hail of bullets or worse still get killed by a werewolf. He imagined what his pack mates would do to her body if she fell into their hands. He quickly brushed the hideous thoughts away. The only thing to do was to find her. One way or the other, he was going to go into that town, find her and bring her over to his place.
He tossed the phone to the bed. Quickly, he dashed to his closet. In one minute flat he was fully dressed. He rushed out of the room.
Outside the moon rode the black, heavy rumble of clouds. The air, unlike the inside cabin, was much cooler. Victor dashed to the back of the cabin. He headed to his triumph bike which was parked in a shed. He mounted it and fired it up. The bike came alive, growling. The headlight snapped on. He revved it, fed it more gas and it roll out of the shed and onto the dusty, sandy road.
The headlight lit the curvy road that led out of the woods and into the town of Fur Rivers. Victor grinds the accelerator and the bike purrs, surging forward. He was about to get to that junction that leads off from the woods to the town, when ahead of him, the headlight of an incoming car jumped out of the stiffening darkness. The car was coming at a fast pace towards him. Victor screwed up his face. Instinctively he pressed down the brakes and the bike slackened speed. A red alarm was flashing in his mind. Then he noticed the car had stopped moving. The headlight was still on and it was as if the car was in the middle of the road. Something is up, he thought. Just then he heard a scream. It sounded like the scream of a woman……… a woman in danger. He heard the scream again. He tightened his hand on the accelerator and the bike eats up the kilometers. He was about to get to where the car was when he suddenly braked sharply. He glared into the suffocating darkness.
A woman lay in the hard, white circle of the car headlamp. She was not moving. Two big men stood over her. In their hands, they cradled a gun, a very big gun. The moonlight glimmered on their faces. It was white, tight and expressionless. All of a sudden, one of the man hoarsely said “Look! It’s green! A werewolf is nearby.
“Yeah! Mine too! This fucking woods gives me the creeps,” the other man snapped.
Victor focused his attention on the woman. There was something about her. Something about her that looks familiar. Victor sniffed the air. Then he stiffened with fright. Selena’s natural aura came into his nose. He stiffened, cold shocked into believing his super senses were playing tricks on him. He sniffed the air again. The smell of Selena hits him. Selena! It was her alright! An angry look jumped into his eyes. He cursed loudly and swung off the bike. He started to run towards the car, his eyes glittering murderously. He heard one of the men again.
“Oh shit! It’s gone red! The werewolf is coming! It’s fucking coming!”
Victor did not even pay attention to what they were saying. His only thought was to deal with the men for what they had done to Selena. He was about to get to them, when he heard a loud explosion….….. you know that kind of explosion a canon makes. A red ray flashed out of the darkness and raced towards him. Victor saw it……….he actually saw it coming. A wild thought came into his head. WolfStoppers! The men had that wolf killer gun with them. He was in a hell of a jam. Terror gripping him, Victor leaped into the thickets. The ray flash swiped past him and touched down into the thickets. It sets the thickets ablaze. Victor jumps to his feet abruptly. He was badly shaken and he hated how he felt at that moment. Flashes of ray from the Wolf Stopper descended into the thickets and then exploded, a moment later, part of the thickets was in flames, burning furiously.
Victor could feel chains of his wolf fury uncoiling inside of him…..seeping through his veins, moving through him. In the darkness of the night, his eyes blazed like a deer in a headlight. His mind began to work frantically. He knew too well about the Wolf Stopper and how it works. If he confronts the men, facing them, the Wolf Stopper will fix him. The only way to stall the WolfStopper, to buy time for himself was to confront the men from their behind. That way they wouldn’t see him coming. Before the gun would have jerked them around, he would have fixed them. The idea sounded weak but that moment, nothing tangible came into his head.
He started to run through the thickets. He ran deliberately in a half circle until he was behind the two fur hunters. Then he came at them, his eyes crazy with murder. The Wolf Stoppers powerfully began to propel the men around…….letting them know that a werewolf was behind them. Victor was on them before they even had an inkling of what was actually happening. He sank a violent fist into the neck of one of them. The man toppled over, went down on both hands and knees, squealing with pain.
His wolf strength coursing through him, Victor violently kicked him on his head. In the silence of the night, he heard the sharp sound a small bone makes when it breaks. The Wolf Stopper in the man’s hand fell to the ground. Victor stamped his foot hard on it. It splintered into two - just the way you will break a stick. The whirring sound went off.
The second man had turned around. Before the Wolf Stopper had fire, Victor kicked it out of hands. The big gun sailed into the thickets, firing off automatically. Victor swung his fist, first into the Fur Hunter’s face, then quickly tapped in another violent blow into the man’s chest. There was a lot of super-werewolf strength in that punch. The blow lifted the man off his feet. There was a loud noise as his massive body killingly cannoned against the body of the car. He crumpled to the ground in a heap. Victor eyed the two men, his eyes blazing hot. They were not moving…….they were not moving at all.
Heaving heavily from the onslaught, he ran to where Selena lay. In the powerful beam of the car headlights, he saw the side of her face swollen with encrusted blood. Her purse was beside her, on the dusty road. Victor bent and carried her up in his arms. He listened, relying on his wolf super senses. He could feel her heart beating. Her pulse was fine. She must have fainted. His mind was working again. In her condition it would be difficult to carry her on his bike. His eyes settled on the car. This will do! He would come back for his bike. He picked up her purse and slapped the dust from. He then carried her into the back of the car and laid her gently down on it. He tossed the purse beside her. Then he went around the car to the driver’s seat. He slid behind the wheels. The key was in the ignition. He fired the engine and floored it.
Few minutes later, he was back at the cabin hut. Picking up her purse, he carried Selena out of the car and into the cabin. He placed her on the bed. Then dropped the purse on a table. He went out into the dark night. He slid behind the wheels, expertly whipped the car around and drove to where the Fur Hunters were. They still lay huddled up on the dusty road. Victor stepped out of the car and walked over to where they lay. He regarded them. He had a feeling they were dead. The punches must have killed them. Victor felt no sympathy for them. This was payback. He bent down and picked up one of each of the men’s legs. He dragged them to the car. He went to the trunk and flipped it open. Then he heaved the two men into the back of the car and slammed the lid shut. He slid behind the wheels and drove to a river he had seen while wandering in the woods.
He got there and stepped out of the car, leaving the engine running. He looked around.
The river side was very quiet and deserted. The moon leaped over the clouds, lightning the river and it sparkled like diamonds. He was alone. He leaned inside the car, keeping the door opened with his shoulder. He pressed down the clutch with hand, put the gear lever into level three, pulled the hand throttle out fully, the engine was running fast, then he released the clutch, and leaped backwards.
The car jumped forward and raced madly into the river. The water closed over the car. The current was strong. He could see the rush of water in the moonlight. Those bodies would be taken care of for a while. Victor raced back to where he had parked his bike. Half an hour later, he got there and mounted it. Fired it up and rode it back to the cabin hut. When he got there, Selena had opened her eyes and was trying to sit up on the bed. He came over to the bed. There was deep concern for her in his eyes.
“Hey, are you alright?”
She looked up at Victor, her eyes regarding his tall, broad shouldered figure, his lean hard face and the blackness of his jet black hair. What a splendid looking man, she thought.
“I’m okay,” her voice was low, very low.
Victor drew in a sharp breath of relief.
“Let me get you some ice for your face,” and he crossed the room to the fridge, took out some ice pack and came over to the bed. He reached down and put his hand under her knees. Then swinging her off the bed, so that she was half sitting, half lying across his knees. Gently he put the ice pack on the swollen part of her face. He heard her wince and he swore under his breath.
