Chapter 20

The battle with Morganna in the Shadow Realm was unlike anything I'd ever experienced.

She moved like liquid darkness, her attacks combining physical violence with reality-warping magic that made the very ground beneath our feet uncertain. One moment we'd be fighting on solid crystalline ground, the next we'd be suspended in void while gravity decided which direction was down.

But Kai and I had advantages she hadn't counted on.

The mate bond allowed us to coordinate without speaking, to know where the other would be before they moved there. When Morganna launched a spell that should have torn me apart at the molecular level, Kai was already in position to counter with his own enchanted blade. When shadow creatures tried to flank him, I was there with crown-powered authority that sent them fleeing.

"You can't win," Morganna snarled as I pressed my attack. "This is my domain now. I've had twenty years to learn its secrets."

"Maybe," I replied, ducking under a blast of corrupted energy. "But I have something you don't."

"Oh? And what's that?"

"People who love me enough to follow me into hell." I channeled power through my sword, the blade blazing with silver fire. "When was the last time someone cared about you enough to risk their life?"

The question hit home. For just a moment, uncertainty flickered across Morganna's features, and I saw something that might have been loneliness in her eyes.

That moment of hesitation was all I needed.

My blade found the gap in her defenses, slicing through whatever protective spells she'd woven around herself. Dark blood splashed across the crystalline ground, and she stumbled backward with genuine shock on her face.

"Impossible," she gasped. "I am the Shadow Queen here. I command "

"You command nothing," I said firmly, advancing with my sword still ready. "You're a prisoner just like everyone else. The only difference is you've been pretending otherwise."

To prove my point, I reached out with crown-enhanced senses and felt the truth of the Shadow Realm. Morganna wasn't its ruler she was its most valued captive, kept in luxury but still bound by chains she couldn't see.

"The entities have been using you," I continued. "Letting you think you were in control while they prepared for the real prize a royal heir who would come willingly into their trap."

"Lies," but her voice lacked conviction now.

"Are they? When was the last time you tried to leave this place? When was the last time you made a decision that the entities didn't somehow guide you toward?"

I saw the moment when she realized I was right. Twenty years of manipulation and false authority crashing down around her like a house of cards.

"It doesn't matter," she said desperately. "Even if you're right, it's too late. The convergence is already beginning. Your mother's power and yours combined will give them everything they need to consume the multiverse."

"Then we'd better stop them." I looked toward the twisted Academy structure. "Where is she?"

"The highest tower. But Aria " For the first time since I'd known her, Morganna's voice carried genuine concern. "What they've done to her... she's not the same person you remember. Twenty years in this place changes people."

"Then I'll help her remember who she is." I started walking toward the structure, Kai falling into step beside me. "Just like someone helped me remember when I was lost."

The twisted Academy was worse inside than out. Corridors folded in on themselves, doors opened onto rooms that existed in different dimensions, and the walls whispered in languages that predated sanity. But the crown allowed me to navigate the impossible geometry, following the growing warmth of royal blood toward its source.

We found her in a chamber at the top of the highest spire.

Luna Silverbane sat in the center of a ritual circle, chains of shadow and starlight binding her to a throne that looked disturbingly similar to the one Malrick had used. But where his had been gaudy and pretentious, this one was elegant and terrible clearly designed for someone the entities considered important rather than disposable.

She was exactly as I remembered from old photographs, untouched by the twenty years that had passed. Royal blood, it seemed, had its benefits even in captivity.

But when she looked up at me, I saw that Morganna had been right about one thing. The woman I'd called mother was changed, hardened by decades of resistance and isolation into something sharp and dangerous.

"Aria?" Her voice was exactly as I remembered, but carried undertones of disbelief. "How are you here? How did you find this place?"

"Long story." I approached the ritual circle carefully, noting the symbols etched around its perimeter. "I'm here to get you out."

"You can't." She gestured to the chains binding her. "These aren't just physical restraints. They're woven into the fabric of the bargain I made. Break them, and the entities can claim you instead."

"What if I told you I found a way around the bargain?"

Hope flickered in her eyes. "How?"

"By refusing to accept the terms." I drew my sword, its enchanted blade gleaming in the strange light of the chamber. "The entities need consent, right? They need us to willingly serve as anchors. But what if instead of running or surrendering, we fight?"

"Fight beings that exist outside normal reality?"

"Why not? I've been fighting impossible odds since the day I fled my arranged marriage." I smiled, feeling more confident than I had since entering this nightmare realm. "Besides, I have backup."

As if summoned by my words, the communication device I'd brought crackled to life.

"Earth-Prime, this is Earth-Seven," came my own voice from across the multiverse. "We've successfully driven back the manifestations here. Local entities are in full retreat."

"Earth-Nine reporting similar success," added another version of myself. "Whatever you're doing over there, it's working. The entities seem to be losing coherence."

I looked at my mother with growing excitement. "That's the other part of my plan. Every version of me across the multiverse is fighting back simultaneously. We're not just refusing to serve as anchors we're actively disrupting their ability to maintain presence in our realities."

"Multiple realities?" Luna's eyes widened. "Aria, that's... that's brilliant. If you can coordinate across dimensional barriers..."

"We can turn their own multidimensional nature against them," I finished. "Instead of them using us to stabilize their presence, we use our connection to destabilize it."

I raised my sword toward the chains binding her. "But it only works if you help. I need you to lend me your power, combine our royal abilities into something strong enough to shatter their hold on both of us."

"It's dangerous. If we fail "

"If we don't try, the multiverse ends anyway." I met her eyes steadily. "I'm not the little girl you sacrificed yourself to protect. I'm a Queen now, with my own power and my own choices. Let me choose to save you."

For a long moment, she studied my face. Then she smiled the first genuine smile I'd seen from her since we'd been reunited.

"You look like me at your age," she said softly. "Stubborn, determined, and absolutely convinced you can fix everything through sheer force of will."

"Did it work for you?"

"Eventually." She straightened in her chains, and I felt royal power begin to flow from her toward me. "All right, daughter. Show me what a Queen can do."

I brought my sword down on the shadow-starlight chains with every ounce of strength I possessed, both physical and magical.

The blade connected with the restraints, and reality exploded.

Power mine, hers, and something vast and ancient that came from the crown itself blazed through the chamber like a silver sun. The chains didn't just break; they disintegrated, their component energies scattering back into whatever dimension they'd been drawn from.

My mother rose from the throne, free for the first time in twenty years, and the Shadow Realm itself began to shake.

"The entities," she said urgently. "They'll try to stop us before we can escape."

"Let them try." I activated my communication device. "All realities, this is Earth-Prime. We've freed Luna Silverbane and disrupted the anchor point. Begin maximum disruption protocols now."

Through the device, I could hear the sounds of battles across the multiverse as every version of myself launched coordinated attacks on manifesting entities.

But more importantly, I could feel something fundamental changing in the Shadow Realm around us. The entities' presence was becoming unstable, their ability to maintain coherence in our reality weakening with each passing second.

"The portal," Kai said urgently, pointing toward a new tear in reality that had appeared near the chamber's entrance. "It's opening back to our world."

"Then let's go home," I said, taking my mother's hand.

As we ran toward the portal Luna, Kai, and me, with even Morganna following behind us as the Shadow Realm began to collapse around her I felt something I hadn't experienced in weeks.

Complete, unqualified victory.

The entities had been outmaneuvered, the multiverse was safe, and I was bringing my family home.

Not bad for a girl who'd started this journey just trying to avoid an arranged marriage.
