Chapter 32 Distraction
Chapter 32 Distraction
Tom POV
“What’s going on?” I muttered to myself, wiping off the sweat that had begun to form on my forehead.
I tapped on yet another account I had just created to upload the video of Marilyn and Lilian, the CEO Dante’s secretary… but my account just kept getting blocked.
Was someone behind this? Is that even possible? I wondered.
I switched devices and repeated the process. Same result.
Each upload attempt died the second the video processed.
My hands tightened around the phone.
I was about to create another account when a sharp voice cut through the cubicle.
“Tom. I told you I needed those files an hour ago, and they still haven’t been touched. Do you realize this is a work environment?”
I flinched and dropped my phone onto the desk, turning quickly and bowing my head.
“I’ll get on them now, ma’am.”
She didn’t move.
So I grabbed the nearest file, opened it, and forced myself to start skimming even though the lines blurred and my mind was stuck on something else.
The manager eventually left, but I didn’t return to my phone immediately. I stayed on the file and focused on wrapping it up. With Dante—the CEO—suddenly aware of me, I couldn’t risk any complaint that might get me kicked out. The pay here was good. It was probably my only real shot at something stable.
After working for over an hour, I took the file to my manager’s office. I knocked three times, and she told me to come in.
“Here’s the file you needed, ma’am. I had it proofread… but in case there are errors, just let me know,” I said.
I turned to leave, but her voice stopped me.
“Come have a seat, Thomas.”
I cringed inside at her saying my full name, but I forced a polite smile and sat. The silence stretched between us. It wasn’t the normal work silence either. It felt like something had shifted, and that alone made my stomach tighten.
Was I about to get fired?
Great. Perfect. Just what I needed.
“Ma’am, I know I wasn’t the—”
“Jane,” she cut in suddenly.
“What?” I blinked.
“Stop calling me ‘ma’am.’ My name is Jane.”
That threw me off, but I nodded. “Okay, ma’am—Jane.”
She let out a light laugh, not the professional kind she used around the rest of the staff, but something younger, almost girly. Then she stood and walked toward the window.
She just stared out the window for a long moment, silent. I kept my eyes on the floor, pretending the room wasn’t shrinking around us. Then she spoke—calm, almost casual.
“I heard you’re getting married.”
My mouth reacted before my brain did. “Yes, ma’am.”
She let out a small laugh.
I flushed. “I mean—Jane.”
That made her laugh again, a real one this time. I wasn’t sure what to do with the way it warmed the room.
She finally turned from the window and looked back at me over her shoulder. “Do I make you nervous… Thomas?”
Normally I hated my full name. But from her lips, it felt different. Like it fit me in a way it never had.
“No,” I said, even though my pulse said otherwise.
She stepped closer, slow and unhurried. “You sure?” she asked, watching me with this teasing little look that made my stomach twist.
I swallowed. “I think so.”
She didn’t look convinced. The corner of her mouth lifted, and then she reached up and slid the window blind closed. The snap of it shutting felt louder than it should have. The room dimmed, warmer somehow.
She walked toward me, each step precise, and I suddenly didn’t know where to put my hands. She stopped right in front of me, looking at me like I was something she was studying—something she’d been curious about for a while.
“I shouldn’t flirt with you,” she said quietly. “But you make it hard not to.”
My breath hitched. “I… do?”
She traced her thumb along my collar, just barely. The touch was light, but it sent every nerve in my body on high alert.
“You don’t even realize how you look at me,” she murmured.
I didn’t know what to say. I barely knew how to breathe.
Then she lowered herself a little, not kneeling fully, not yet—just enough to make the air between us electric.
“I’ve been wanting to do something,” she said, eyes flicking up to mine. “For a long while.”
Just then I realized that her shirt button had come undone exposing a good portion of her cleavage.
“Do what Ma’am…Jane…” I asked not looking away from her chest.
Her hand hovered near my waist. Everything inside me froze.
She paused, her voice softer. “Do you mind?”
For a second, all I could do was stare at her, trying to understand how this was happening.
Trying to understand why every part of me suddenly wanted it.
I shook my head once since words failed me.
She smiled. “Touch them.”
My gaze shot up. “What?”
“You want to touch them don't you? So touch them.”
My gaze shifted to her cleavage then I looked back at her. Was this a trick?
She held my hand and began to guide me to her chest… I was this close to touching it when I suddenly kicked my chair back and stood up.
“I’m sorry, Jane, but I… I can’t,” I said, voice catching slightly. “I think you’re… gorgeous. Insanely gorgeous. Probably the most stunning woman in the building…” My eyes betrayed me, flicking to her as she stood up. I stammered, trying to string together something coherent, but the words stuck.
She smiled, a knowing, playful curl on her lips, and returned to her seat. Slowly, deliberately, she leaned back in her chair, undoing a button or two more. The movement was casual, but the effect was undeniable—my attention locked on her, and I could feel myself struggling to look away.
I struggled to turn… But my eyes refused to move with me. It stayed on her cleavage. Jane eyes closed briefly, a small, teasing sigh escaping her, and I realized just how charged the air between us had become.
With her juicy cleavage sitting pretty on her bra. My feet began to move on their own to where she was.
