Book One in the "Her Unexpected Mate" series. The highlight of Melody’s day, while working at the Sub Shoppe, is her tall, dark, and handsome customer. He is a police officer, built like a God, and for some reason has never asked her out, no matter how much she wants him to. He’s probably out of her league and doesn’t feel the need to date a college student, but she feels a connection to him and she wonders if he feels it too. Finn Caomhanach makes sure to visit the Sub Shoppe daily, just to get a glimpse of the cute waitress whom he feels an irresistible draw to. The Alpha inside of him recognizes her as his mate even if he, himself, won’t admit it. His life is complicated and dangerous and he won’t risk her life. When he runs into her at the local BDSM club, and discovers she’s in danger from others of his kind, all bets are off. Publisher’s Note: This shifter romance contains elements of danger, action, adventure, sensual scenes, and power exchange.

Prologue

From my perch high in the mountains, I watch as the two brothers work the ancient druid magic they do not understand. They’re trying to protect their lands and their people from me. They know not what we are or from where we came. They invoke magic that will turn on them if misused. Even I do not dare to play with such dark things.

A howl breaks through the night, and I turn my head in the direction from which it came. No! I roar into the night. I run down the side of the mountain with an unnatural speed. I hear the cries of men through the night, mere mortals who think they can battle me and mine. We have been hunting these lands for centuries and will continue to do so long after they are gone. Their puny lives pass in the blink of an eye. Another howl breaks through the silence of the night, and I increase my speed. I am close now. I can smell my brother in the air, and I can smell blood. I’m too late.

Whatever these men have awakened in the land has aided them. It has chosen them over me. I skid to a stop and peer through the trees. No! Brother! They have him on the ground. He is gone!

The dark silhouette of a massive wolf evaporates into the air above them. What have they done? What is this dark magic that they have brought forth into my night? I rule these lands. I rule the night.

I break forth into the clearing and take them off guard. Two are dead before the others even realize I’m there. They were not expecting a second wolf. Quickly, I kill the remaining shepherds who dared to take my brother from me.

After I finish licking the blood from my paws and eat the last of their hearts, I will hunt down the two who brought forth this beast to help take down my family. I will hunt them to the last of their line and make sure not a single man, woman, or child survives my wrath.

My stomach is sated by the time I finish my feast, but I remain hungry for revenge. When I return to the stone dolmen, I find that the two fools who dare to play with the druid gods have gone. The sun peeks up over the horizon. I am out of time tonight. Time, however, is on my side. I have an eternity to wait and plan.
